Hummus Pizza

Pizza has to be one of those classic All-American meals that practically everyone enjoys. The problem is when we start to layer the pizza with fat packed toppings like cheese galore, sausage, pepperoni, etc. Pizza is very versatile, and now toppings such as spinach and roasted red pepper may be making their way into regular rotation. Another great way to make pizza healthy AND delicious is by using hummus as the base instead of pizza sauce.
Hummus is a garbanzo bean paste flavored with garlic and other spices that will add that simple sophistication we love about pizza. Hummus also provides the meal with that boost of protein and fiber to help you stay full without the fat calories from cheese. Regardless of the flavor of hummus you use, it provides more than enough flavor, making it easy to ditch the dairy. By using individual pita breads, this hummus pizza can create a family night in a flash by inviting everyone to layer their pizza with toppings of their choice.

Get creative with your toppings using whatever you have on hand, or some familiar pizza favorites including:
- sweet bell peppers
- onions
- white or baby bella mushrooms
- grilled portabella slices
- broccoli
- roasted eggplant
- roasted squash or zucchini
- roasted red peppers
- spinach
- olives
- green onion
